On July 1, 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule (CMS 1749-P) to update payment policies and rates under the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System (PPS) for dialysis services furnished to beneficiaries on or after January 1, 2022. This rule also proposes updates to the acute kidney injury (AKI) dialysis payment rate for dialysis services furnished by ESRD facilities to individuals with AKI; changes to the ESRD Quality Incentive Program (QIP); and modifications to the ESRD Treatment Choices (ETC) Model to encourage providers to decrease disparities in rates of home dialysis and kidney transplants among individuals with kidney disease with lower socioeconomic status. Comments regarding the proposed rule were due to CMS by August 31, 2021.
CMS hosted a webinar on the proposed rule on July 27, 2021.
