PITMAN, N.J. — The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) strongly supports the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) in response to the recent Bloomberg Businessweek article, "The Miseducation of America’s Nurse Practitioners."
The article's portrayal of nurse practitioners (NPs) overlooks their essential contributions to healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas. As highlighted by the AANP, nurse practitioners have consistently risen to meet our nation's healthcare challenges. NPs are highly trained, nationally certified professionals who provide crucial care, including in nephrology where shortages are significant.
"Given the nephrology workforce issues, particularly in areas with limited access to kidney care, Nurse Practitioners are crucial in meeting the needs of the community,” said ANNA President Nancy Colobong Smith, MN, ARNP, ANP-BC, CNN.
We join AANP President Stephen Ferrara, DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP in calling for balanced reporting that acknowledges the expertise and dedication of NPs. Their role in delivering high-quality, cost-effective care is indispensable to our healthcare system.
